Saveetha  Medical College and Hospital has joined as one of the few centres in India where the facility of closure of holes in the heart is available without surgery. Only two other centres do this procedure in chennai.
The Cardiology Department in Saveetha Medical College has been actively doing interventions in both adults and children since it was established a couple of years ago. It also has special emphasis on primary angioplasty for patients with heart attack residing especially in the outskirts of Chennai. Steadily becoming popular among the people living near poonamallee, Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram.
Chitra[name changed] 10years old girl studying  in fifth standard used to feel breathless when she used to play with her friends, she will take rest  for a short period before resuming to play every time when she becomes breathless.
The parents become concerned with her problems and she was being treated by local Doctors near her house with injections and tablets with no major improvement in her clinical condition.
When there was no improvement in her symptoms, the child’s grandmother forced the parents to take the child to Saveetha Medical College for detailed evaluation.
The child was examined  by Senior Cardiologist Dr. A. G. Narayanaswamy  - Saveetha Medical College Hospital and was diagnosed to have a hole in the heart, which was later confirmed by Cardiac Echo,
The news was conveyed to the parents. The parents had heard that holes    in the heart can be closed only by open heart surgery, but Dr. A. G. Narayanaswamy impressed on them that this hole in the heart of their child can be closed with a device thus avoiding open heart surgery.
After getting consent from parents, the child underwent successful closure of the hole in the heart with the device on 20th July 2015 by the cardiac team of senior consultant cardiologist Dr. A. G. Narayanaswamy and Dr. Vinoth Kumar,Asst.Prof Dept of Cardiology, Saveetha Medical College, The whole procedure was done through a small injection in the thigh and the child was discharged after 24 hours.
Most individuals with untreated hole in the heart do not have significant symptoms through early Childhood. Symptoms are typically decreased exercise tolerance, tiredness, feeling of excessive beating of heart and giddiness.
Complications of not treating this hole in the heart include, heart failure, irregular beating of the heart and death.
By  closing the holes in the heart with devices, the patient is spared of the problems of open heart surgery and the unsightly appearance of postoperative scar especially in girl patients.
This procedure costs above 12 lakh rupees in other centres, She underwent the procedure completely free of cost through Chief minister's Comprehensive health insurance scheme.
Moreover the child never experienced any pain or discomfort throughout the procedure and after. She was happily playing with other children's in the ward.
